"Enlistees were supposed to measure at least 5 feet 6 1/2 inches in height, younger men of less stature could join if they showed promise of one day attaining it. During the war, this requirement was reduced to 5 feet 4 inches for those over eighteen, an inch less if under. The maximum height for light dragoons, was 5 feet 8 inches."
