Punishments

Merry Hearts Make Light Days (The War of 1812 Journal of Lt. John LeCouteur, 104th Foot). Donald E. Graves. Carlton University Press, Ottawa, Canada, 1993. P.80.

"The punishments at this period, throughout the British army, were tremendous in the extreme. Our worthy Colonel was rather averse to them, his brave Scotch heart held for his men when He thought duty required the lash. Not so, others. In a corps in Garrison with us in Jersey, in which My Old Butler and my Father before me, was a Private - a dirty Button or a foul belt, would lead men to a Court Martial and to Two or three hundred lashes."
