Blackball is a combination of beef tallow, beeswax, and soot that was used in the 18th century as a multi-purpose leather treatment, waterproofing, conditioning, and blackening in one fell swoop.

Go to the dollar store, and get a couple of shoe brushes. Apply it with one, then after it dries a bit, buff it off with the other brush. You can also put dubbin on the soles to prevent them from drying out.
