A labourer born in the parish of Sutton near Montreal, he enlisted at Trois Rivieres on 15 April, 1814 for 3 years. Described as having a fair complexion, dark eyes and brown hair, Benjamin was one of the smaller men in the regiment. Standing at 4'11", he was only 11 years old when he volunteered. He was discharged on 24 June, 1816.
