The simplest ones are typically square in shape with only one point of entrance and exit.

They are always a detached work, usually beyond the glacis but within small arms reach. They are a small defensive, heavily constructed work that is built in such a manner that it has no flanking protection and it is often located at strategic points.

It can also be constructed as a defensive position within a very large bastion.
